Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
