Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
