Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
